Lam takes one-shot lead at Asian Amateur

October 8th 2010 -

Lam Zhiqun shot a 5-under 66 Friday to take a one-shot lead at the Asian Amateur.

Lam, 21, of Singapore, sits at 7-under 145, one shot ahead of first-round leader Yosuke Asaji at Kasumigaseki Country Club in Kawagoe City.

Lam, the 2007 Singapore Amateur champion, posted a bogey-free round on the West Course and sank a 12-foot birdie putt on the final hole to take the outright lead.

The winner of the Asian Amateur will receive a spot in the 2011 Masters. The winner and runner-up also will earn a place in International Final Qualifying for the 2011 British Open at Royal St. George’s. Chang-Won Han won the inaugural Asian Amateur last fall.

“I played well today and holed a few putts, which made the difference, so I am very happy to be 7 under after two days,” Lam said. “I am trying not to think about the rewards that come with this event. I am sure it will pop into my head from time to time, but I will just have to wait and see what happens come the 72nd hole on Sunday.”

Kyung-hoon Lee shot a 67 to vault into a tie for third, two shots back, along with Hideki Matsuyama. Kieran Pratt and Tarquin MacManus are another shot behind.
