—The Spirit Golf Association (SGA) has agreed to postpone the 2017 Spirit International, originally scheduled for October 30 to November 4, 2017. This decision was made by the SGA Board of Directors in response to the need to support the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund efforts.
The SGA was formed to use amateur golf to bring the world closer together and raise money for charity. It has donated over $12 million to its beneficiaries: The Spirit International Amateur Championship; The First Tee Program; Baylor College of Medicine Teen Health Clinic’s; Medical Bridges and the Immunization Partnership. The SGA charitable contributions are generated from its individual, charitable and corporate members and the sponsors of The Spirit International.
Hurricane Harvey made landfall three separate times in six days. During its peak on September 1, 2017, one-third of Houston was underwater. Total rainfall hit 52 inches in some areas. The catastrophic flooding forced over 50,000 people out of their homes and has created over $180 Billion in damage. We hope that our contribution to help victims of Hurricane Harvey will inspire others to assist those in need. Hurricane Irma has created destruction in Florida, so hurricane victims across the country have grown. Our prayers are with the victims and the enormous number of friends and neighbors who are volunteering their time, effort and resources to the recovery.
The compelling needs for Hurricane Harvey victims have refocused our efforts this year, but we will continue to serve our missions. The SGA will continue to host The Spirit International Amateur Championship in the future at our unique setting: Whispering Pines Golf Club is the #1 ranked golf course in Texas by Dallas Morning News
